We’ll be sad to say goodbye to the bright evenings and warmer weather that an Irish summer brings. Before we welcome in the dark cosy nights, there is still time to enjoy the last breaths of summer with a weekend getaway in Waterford, the oldest city in Ireland. There is so much to see and do here, from fun outdoor activities to lovely nights in with family, and Viking Hotel is here to cover all your needs. Here are some of the many highlights of a weekend break in Waterford that you shouldn’t miss.

Waterford Greenway

Cycling is a popular pastime in Waterford and it’s no wonder when you see the scenery surrounding our gorgeous city. If you’d like to see one of the most beautiful parts of Ireland Ancient East, cycle the Waterford Greenway. This 46km greenway starts at the Quays of Waterford, all the way through areas of rich Irish heritage to the historic port of Dungarvin. Along the way, you’ll see some of the most impressive sights in the county including eleven bridges, three viaducts and a 400m long tunnel that runs from the river to the sea. You can enjoy lakes, castles, parks and gardens and you can stop for pictures any time that suits you. It’s an excellent day out for all the family and best of all, once you’ve reached the end, a bus can bring you and your bikes all the way back! Read more about the greenway in our blog.

Explore Waterford City

Waterford City is filled with history and heritage of the area. Founded by the Vikings between 856 and 914, Waterford City is over 1,000 years old and has the largest collection of medieval defensive towers and walls in Ireland. Start by taking a walk along the river and down by the old city walls, exploring the six towers which are still standing today. Stop for a closer look at Reginald’s Tower, the most impressive of them all which is in the Viking Triangle. Learn more about the city’s crafting heritage in The House of Waterford Crystal and learn what it was like living here in olden times in the Medieval Museum. There’s a lot to take in so plan your weekend well & make sure you visit all of the important parts.
