Have you ever considered a cycling holiday in Ireland? Aside from great shopping, great bars & restaurants and an abundance of medieval buildings and attractions, Waterford is also a fantastic place for an active getaway along Irelands Ancient East. The Waterford Greenway is one of the most spectacular cycle routes in the country and starts close to the Viking Hotel. Here are some tips for a successful and enjoyable cycling trip to Waterford.

The Waterford Greenway

The Waterford Greenway is a spectacular 46km off-road cycling and walking trail between Waterford and Dungarvan. Known locally as the Déise Greenway, the rail trail is one of the most scenic ways to see the county. There are many attractions to check out along the way so you can enjoy a beautiful, scenic journey with as many rest breaks as you like. Take a journey through time and nature across eleven bridges, three viaducts and a 400m long tunnel that runs from the river to the sea. Take your time exploring Viking settlements, a Norman castle, deserted railway stations, an Ice Age rock with apparent mythical powers, Medieval ruins and a heritage railway train that still runs along part of the track. You can begin your Greenway Journey from WIT Campus, just 4km away from Viking Hotel, where you can also rent bikes.

Bike rental

We have many guests travelling long distances or from overseas to enjoy Waterford without bringing bikes. Don’t worry, the city and surroundings have plenty of reliable bike rental shops offering everything you need for a great day out. They supply all sorts of bikes from city rollers to mountain bikes and offer helmets and insurance as some extra safety features. You can rent electric bikes to give yourself a little break or tow-along options for the kids. You can arrange to collect bikes from designated locations or ask the company to deliver the bike to the hotel so you can start from here.
If you do complete the entire greenway, chances are as a novice cyclist you’ll be tired. You can stop in Dungarvan and refuel in one of the many cafes and restaurants or book a shuttle bus to take you and your bike back to where you started. There really are options for everyone, no matter your age or fitness level.
If you want to travel with your bike, Viking Hotels Greenway Hub is here for your peace of mind. Use your own lock to secure your bike safety of our bike rack and enjoy your stay knowing your property is secure. We also have a handy vending machine filled with snacks and drinks to refresh before or after a cycle and some very handy bike essentials like puncture repair kits in case you run into trouble.
