During your stay at Viking Hotel Waterford, why not take advantage of the many surrounding beaches and take a dip into the sea! We have some of the best beaches in Ireland, just a short drive away, below are some of our favourites.

Tramore Beach

Stretches across approximately 5 kilometres across. This beautiful sandy beach in county Waterford is only a 15-minute drive from Waterford City and perfect for long relaxing walks. At one end of the beach are the sand dunes while at the other end are steep cliffs.

Tramore is popular for surfing; ‘Freedom Surf School’ in Tramore provides Surf Lessons kids and adults as well as the facility to rent equipment. The amusement park makes Tramore a very family-friendly coastal town which includes arcades, beautiful restaurants, and the staple seaside town tasty fish & chip shops.

Dunmore East Beach

Is located 25 minutes from Waterford City. Dunmore East itself is a tourist and fishing village. Within Dunmore East, there are several beautiful coves including Stony Cove, Ladies Cove, Mans Cove & Badgers Cove.

Lovely bars and restaurants in this village include Powers Bar, The Spinnaker Bar, Azzuro At The Ship and more. During the summer there is no better place to be! Dunmore East Holiday Park has been purpose built and caters for camping caravans and motorhomes. Portally is a tiny cove in a narrow sea inlet and is connected to Dunmore East by a narrow cliff path which makes for a lovely walk, also worth mentioning.

Clonea Beach

Is less than a 50 minutes drive from Waterford City but just 5 minutes from the town of Dungarvan. This is a lovely beach for long walks, visible from the Waterford Greenway and very picturesque. During the summer months, your safety is ensured with lifeguards on patrol.

The beach also has a water sports centre with a banana boat and also offers paddleboards, kayaking and inflatables for the water. Shops are close by for snacks and other seaside essentials. The nearby Dungarvan town is lovely to visit also with plenty of bars and restaurants available. Some fantastic restaurants inlcude ‘The Tannery’, ‘360 Cookhouse’, ‘The Moorings’ and much more. During the summer months the town is alive with people during the day and night; there is a real holiday feel about the place! Music is plentiful during the evening time in many of the bars such as ‘The Local’ (A favourite of locals) ‘The Anchor’ and more.

Bunmahon Beach

It is 35 minutes from Waterford City. The beach itself stretches for 5km and behind the beach stand sand dunes and tall cliffs giving shelter to the beach. Bunmahon is part of the ‘Copper Coast’ which is the coastline from Tramore to Dungarvan. It has a ‘unique geological heritage’ and its coast boasts undisturbed and raw beauty.

The Copper Coast Geopark Visitor Centre is based in Bunmahon. In the visitor centre you will find the Geological and Mining Heritage Exhibition which is suitable for all the family. The Copper Coast gift centre is a lovely place to browse Irish local crafts, or even pick up a lovely keepsake of your time on the Waterford coast. There is no shortage of refreshments if you fancy the lovely little café here also. The Geopark has guided tours and gives all the information needed on walking trails, cycling and even booking a seaweed forage, sand art class or surfing with Bunmahon Surf School!
