Durrow Tunnel
Durrow Tunnel is located on the 46km walking and cycling track of The Waterford Greenway. The Tunnel is a lovely feature and stretches for almost half a kilometre. The Greenway itself is a fabulous way to spend the day with all the family. There are a number of bike rental companies that do shuttle busses so you can do as much as you please!
Tramore Beach
Tramore beach is located less than 15 minutes from Waterford City it is a long beach; perfect for walks. Tramore is a very popular seaside destination with amusements there for all the family to enjoy. Whether you fancy a spot of lunch or an ice-cream to cool down Tramore never disappoints.
The Harbour and Lighthouse at Dunmore East
Dunmore is a pretty seaside town; a busy fishing port and a favourite of visitors to the area. A very picturesque place indeed! If you are lucky enough to be in the area around June the Dunmore East Festival of Food Fish and Fun takes place. The festival is a favourite of locals providing fantastic stands with loads of local produce to sample. The festival also provides entertainment in the form of music and the buzz at the seaside town around this time is worth experiencing.
Mahon Falls
Mahon Falls is located in The Comeragh Mountains and there is a lovely walk leading up to the Waterfall which takes about 45 minutes round trip. There is lots of parking at the start of the trail to the Waterfall. If nature walks are for you then this gorgeous place is well worth a visit. The scenery is stunning and it is very peaceful.
Counshingaun Lake
Cunshingaun Lake is stunning. The lake itself is about one mile long. There is a walk called The Counshingaun Loop Walk which is 7.5km long. This lake is one of the Comeragh mountains most famous landmarks and one of the best examples of a corrie or coum in Europe. The cliffs behind the lake just add to its splendour.
Mount Congreve Gardens
The Mount Congreve gardens are situated in Kilmeaden Co Waterford just outside the city. The Gardens surround Mount Congreve House; which was home to six generations of Congreves. The gardens are approximately 70 acres of planted woodland. The gardens overlook the River Suir and over 3,000 trees and shrubs can be found there. The mount Congreve Gardens have a garden shop and coffee shop onsite and is a lovely place to spend a few hours.
Kilmacthomas Viaduct
The Kilmacthomas Railway Viaduct is a former railway crossing has a series of 8 arches. The best view of it is seen from the village of Kilmacthomas. It is part of the Waterford greenway and as such, offers stunning views of the countryside while crossing either by foot or bicycle.
Reginald’s Tower
Reginalds Tower was built in the 13th Century and a second phase in the 15th century. The tower has been us as a mint (industrial facility that manufactures coin) a prison and a military store. The tower has now been restored and houses an exhibition. The tower offers guided tours which highlights the interesting history attached to it. A replica of a Viking Longship is exhibited beside the tower which is a lovely feature at the tower.
Dunhill Castle
Dunhill castle is now a ruin but has a huge amount of history attached to it. Perched on top of a hill It was originally built in the early 1200’s. The nearby village of Dunhill gets its name from the Irish translation of the fort of the rock. Dunhill castle now comprises of approximately half a 15th Century tower with bits of outer wall from the 13th Century. The castle is in a great location with beautiful views out to The Irish sea.
Waterford and Suir Valley Railway
This train station is located just outside the village of Kilmeaden. The railway train runs along the picturesque banks of The River Suir. It even offers views of The Mount Congreve gardens and you can even hop off at that point to have a closer look. There is a mark 2 railway carriage that is actually a ticket office and a shop. It is a fantastic attraction for all the family!
