Best of all, Viking Hotel, on the outskirts of Waterford City is an ideal base to stay for couples, offering value, luxury and excellent service from check-in, throughout your stay until you depart. Check out our excellent Stay & Dine offers for the ultimate romantic trip to the Deise.
Explore the City Centre
Viking Hotel is located on the very edge of the city of Waterford, less than 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of the city. The city is packed with things to do and see, places to dine and great shopping. You could spend an afternoon searching for unique street art dotted along every corner of the high street and side streets. You’ll find some hidden treasures and a variety of high street & high-end shops, along with some unique stores and plenty of vintage and second-hand shops to spend hours browsing for a bargain. After a long afternoon of walking around exploring the city, stop in one of the many cafes or pubs for a bite to eat and a refreshing drink. There is a great selection of bars in Waterford ranging from fancy wine and cocktail bars to local pubs serving the finest Guinness on the East Coast.
If you’re interested in the history of Waterford, take a trip to the Medieval Museum, our very own treasure trove. It is filled with trinkets and artefacts from ancient times, along with two medieval chambers, the 13th-century Choristers’ Hall and the 15th century Mayor’s Wine Vault. If you prefer a more modern history, head to the House of Waterford Crystal https://www.waterfordvisitorcentre.com/ to see some seriously impressive pieces, worth hundreds of thousands of euro. Unfortunately, they don’t do free samples!
Peoples Park
If you’ve picked a warm day to visit Waterford together, you might enjoy a romantic walk in the park, hand in hand. Less than 10-minutes’ walk from the city centre is the People’s Park, the largest public park in Waterford city. The park was established over a century ago and it has 16.3 acres of perfectly manicured green space. Keeping many of the original features, the park was renovated a few years ago to include a Victorian-era bandstand, the Goff cycle track, a children’s playground, a spherical monument & water feature and an old painted iron bridge connecting the park to the grounds of the Court House. It’s ideal to enjoy a romantic stroll, a place to relax and chat or an ideal spot for a picnic.
Waterford Greenway
Did you know that Viking Hotel is an excellent hub for the Waterford Greenway? If an ideal activity for you and your other half is exploring the great outdoors with some postcard-worthy scenes along the way, the Greenway is a great choice. You can bring or hire bikes from a local company and spend an entire day (or as much of it as you like) getting to know the greater Waterford area on two wheels. The Greenway is a 46km of mostly flat land, ideal for even the most novice cyclist and there are shuttle buses to bring you and your bike ‘home when you’ve gone as far as you want to. Viking Hotel also has a Greenway Hub, so you can park your bike securely or buy some bike and snack essentials.
