If you’re planning a trip this Spring, Waterford should be the first stop on your list. We’re excited to welcome longer and warmer (we hope!) days with family fun, lunches al fresco and plenty to see and do in Ireland’s oldest city. Waterford has it all; culture, art, history, shopping, dining and a great nightlife and something for all ages and interests. Before you add to your Waterford bucket list, book the perfect accommodation at Viking Hotel Waterford. Our hotel is located close to the city and the brilliant Waterford Greenway. Our comfortable, flexible hotel accommodation can be booked on our website to guarantee our lowest available rates.

Waterford Greenway

The Waterford Greenway is a 46km long cycling trail along the route of an old railway line from Dungarvan to Waterford. Viking Hotel is perfectly placed to explore the Greenway on two wheels, enjoying the fascinating heritage, beautiful scenery, and plenty of exercise. Our ‘Greenway Hub’ has bike racks so that bikes can be secured with your own lock and a vending machine containing all of the essentials for a great day of cycling. If you don’t want to bring your own bike, there are rental shops at the start of the greenway as well as in the centre of town. They even rent electric bikes, tandem bikes, and cargo bikes, ideal for small children.

Parks in Waterford

With the return of brighter days, we’re excited to get back to nature and spend time in the great outdoors. Waterford is a very outdoor city with lots of green space both inside and outside of the city limits. We love admiring the gardens with the abundance of Spring flowers in bloom, cheering up the city façade and our moods! Spend some time in People’s Park the largest and most popular park in Waterford City. You can admire the flowerbeds and beautiful trees in blossom, use the children’s playground, a cycle track, a Victorian-era bandstand, a monument and the water feature. The best thing to do in People’s Park is grab lunch al fresco and enjoy the weather.

Festival of Food Waterford

Spring is the start of festival season in Waterford, and it all kicks off with the 15th annual West Waterford Festival of Food from Friday 19th April to Sunday 21st April 2024. The festival tells the story of Waterford through food, passionate producers, tastes and traditions and it’s always a popular and well-attended event. The main hub for this 3-day event is the scenic harbour town of Dungarvan, Co. Waterford with events also taking place in nearby Lismore, Ardmore, Villierstown, Ballyduff, Cappoquin and Kilmeaden. You can look forward to demos and talks, dining experiences, music, entertainment and more. Some events are individually ticketed so check their official website, so you don’t miss out.

Family Fun in Waterford

With Easter mid-term break to look forward to, you’ll need to find ways to entertain your little ones while they’re off school. Waterford is great for families offering diverse and interesting entertainment for all ages. Activate Waterford is an impressive 25,000 square feet of indoor fun less than a 10-minute drive from the hotel. There are 9 exciting activities under one roof including soft play, bowling, climbing and laser tag. If you can’t face a dip in the freezing Irish Sea, bring the gang to Splashworld a locally run, not-for-profit, community organisation. Facilities include a water park, a 4-lane 25-metre pool, a wave machine, 2 flume slides, a fully equipped gym, and a fitness studio.

Enjoy the Waterford Coast

The Waterford coastline is one of the most beautiful parts of Ireland, no matter the weather. We’re lucky Viking Hotel Waterford is a 15-minute drive from the beach and it’s a great way to spend a Spring day. Take off your shoes and dip your toes, or if you’re brave enough, hop in for a sea swim. Enjoy a walk on the prom, an afternoon relaxing in the sun or a couple of hours enjoying the amusements which are great entertainment if the weather isn’t on your side. The beach is also popular with surfers and there are surf schools to teach you the basics.
