Winterval 2022
Winterval is back this year and promises to be bigger, better and more festive than ever! Waterford, Ireland’s oldest city, will be transformed into a magical Winterval wonderland from Friday, November 18th until Friday, December 23rd. Enjoy festive family attractions, Christmas traders and an array of free and ticketed events for guests of all ages. The festival is organised and funded by Waterford City & County council.
For the landmark 10th anniversary, we’re promised the return of many original attractions like Winterval on Ice, The Waterford Eye and Santa’s Grotto. We’re also expecting new and improved attractions like the Winterval Circus, Magic at the Apple Market, Winterval’s Wizards & Dragons and more. They have also added some extra features to the immersive multi-dimensional light show and extended the European-style Winterval food and craft markets. The programme is packed with fantastic events for all ages with live music and performances and an enchanting display of festive decoration that will dazzle and delight.
Visit Santa
The elves are busy preparing for Santa’s return to Waterford in 2022, a big celebration year for the festival. Santa will make his first appearance on 18th November at the beginning of the five-week festival, occupying ‘Santas central station’, right in the middle of Michael Street. Take plenty of pictures of your little ones with the big man in red, creating memories that will last for years to come. This year, two adults go free with every child and there is an option for professional photos. Santa will be on call all the way until 23rd December.
Entry to visit Santa includes a stuffed Christmas character and exclusive access to Winterval Mobile Video Game. The visit is priced at €16.50 per child with €10 optional professional photos.
Christmas Market
One of the highlights of Winterval every year is the Christmas market. This year there is an emphasis on great quality, unique and independent traders selling their wares either from their own retail units or pretty wooden chalets. We expect a high calibre of products, the same as every year, with even more retailers offering unique gift ideas. You’ll find everything from clothing and textiles to skincare and candles with a little of everything in between. You’ll also have a wide variety of local and international food on offer paired with delicious festive drinks like mulled wine and hot chocolate – arguably the highlight of every Winterval visit!
Winter Activities in Waterford
Aside from Winterval, there is plenty for visitors to see and do in Waterford. Take some time to explore the many shops, bars, pubs and cafes in the city centre, picking up some Christmas gifts or dressing yourself for the holidays. You can take a stroll along the beach in Tramore or enjoy a game at the slot machines (just wrap up well!). Explore the Waterford Greenway on two wheels -or two legs if you’re feeling fit enough. Go for a walk around Mahon Falls, Mount Congreve House or Lismore Castle. Explore the Viking heritage right in the heart of the city around Reginald’s Tower and the Viking Triangle. Admire the workmanship and pick up a delicate keepsake from the world-famous Waterford Crystal. The possibilities are endless!
